With all of the buzz around gluten these days, you may wonder what symptoms to look for to know if gluten is a problem for you.

Well, the answer could be a lot of things! Gluten intolerance or celiac disease can present itself in a number of ways, ranging from extreme fatigue to an itchy skin rash. That being said, there are some typical symptoms to watch out for:

“Classic” symptoms

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gas and bloating
  • Stomach pain
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia

Other potential symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Brain fog
  • Behavioral changes
  • Headache
  • Skin rash/blisters

There are other symptoms as well, but these are the ones most often experienced by people who are intolerant to gluten.

If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, you may want to try cutting gluten out of your diet entirely for a couple of weeks and see if it clears up. If not, I recommend an elimination diet, which removes all the common allergens for a period of time and then reintroduces them one by one to determine the body’s response.
